Refining a map link

Hi, I'm a great fan of Trumba and am exploring the features a bit more. I've tried setting a map link for an event but I have a bit of a problem. I'm in the UK and I've entered the post code for the map link. However, all the services show the 'pin' a few hundres yards away from where I want it.

When I've used a location map for the web site, I've started with the post code and then refined it so I now know the longitude and latitude for where I want the pin. Can I do this with Trumba?

Hi ClaverdonPrimary,
That's a great question! I started messing around with this, and I think that, technically (and the developer confirms), coordinates aren't supported. However, it does appear to work anyway. When you're creating or editing an event, if you enter the coordinates in the Location field and then click Update Map Link, you get an error. However, if you ignore that, and then click Test Map Link, the map returns the correct location. In addition, the link works correctly on your published calendar.

I used this format
Latitude: coordinate
Longitude: coordinate

The catch is that you have to have the coordinates in your Location field, without any other addresses. If Trumba sees an address, it'll take that instead of your coordinates, regardless of the order in which you enter the info.

It sounds like this might not be ideal, but I hope it helps a little.

Jill,

Thaks for that - I couldn't get it to work for me, the maps are stillcoming back with the original verified location. It's only a few hundred yards so it will have to do as is.

The actual location is up a lane off a road through a small village and it can easily be missed if you don't already know where it is and the pin comes back on the road through the village. Ah well, most of the folks who may actually look at this know where the location is anyway so maybe I'm worrying over nothing!

I also have this issue at times, but just go along with it as there is not much I can really do (i use the google map link).

I would like to know if there is a way to make my maps use google as default on events?
I do not like the standard one.

As well, I cannot get trumba to recognise that I am in Australia and to use this as the default country for the maps.
I have to manually change the country to get maps to locate properly. Anyone else have this issue?

Hi shampson,
When I add a map link the first time, and I specify Google Maps, all subsequent map links I add show Google as the default map service. Do you notice whether in some situations Google will be selected as the default? If you add a map link, select Google for your service, and then create a map link on a different event, what service is selected as by default?

Regarding the other issue (US is always the default country), actually, it's not exactly that Trumba doesn't recognize that you are in Australia. Rather, it's not designed to check where you are -- it just has a default value that always is set to the US and isn't dependent on your location. It would be neat if you could set that in your Account or Calendar Settings page. Thanks for that idea! I'll add it to our feature request list. : )

I can't add a map link at all:
1) It doesn't recognise New Zealand even though MS Live maps has excellent coverage of NZ
2) Even when I try to put in a valid address at a supported (but non-US) country it still won't let me add a map link and I certainly can't get Google maps to be the alternate mapping service!

I had given up on Trumba's maps in frustration some time ago and I have inserted my own map link field and I use that usually but with the new Map view I would like to be able to allow users to see where events are on a map but this view always shows "no event data" when I try to use it.

Other than this, Trumba is great!

I have escalated this to our development team to see if they can provide some additional information on this. I will update this post once I hear more. :(

Thanks,
Steve

We did an update this week and the dev team was able to enabled mapping for New Zealand using Windows Live Maps. I did some testing on this as well and was able to map several attractions and hotels in the Auckland and Wellington areas. I hope the mapping coverage provided by Windows Live picks up the majority of your locations!

Steve

Hi Steve

Thanks for this news and for the update! I have tried it out and after a couple of initial hassles it now works great. This now makes Trumba a product that is really special. Please thank all of those people who helped with the update.

Initially I used MS Maps Live as my detail map-server but the NZ Post Codes changed last year over the whole country and MS Maps Live hasn't caught up yet (whereas Google Maps has - possibly because one of the lead managers on the Google Maps team is a Kiwi). The problems with MS Maps Live was that it would find an address when I clicked on verify address but then after that was saved back to the event record and I clicked on Test Map link it would fail to find the address (it seemed to be using different post codes in each module, I am not sure which module was correct).

However, when I switched to Google maps as the detail map server all those problems went away and MS Maps Live happily displays the Google coordinates when it is used in the overview screen.

Anyway, it is now all working for us and so thanks to every one involved, great work.

:(

Trumba released a minor update over the weekend and one of the new enhancements is the ability to allow direct entry of decimal latitude/longitude values for mapped location fields. The format that will accept two comma separate numbers (lat, long). For example “47.6221142897016,-122.354150980154”.

Once you enter in the lat/long values, select the appropriate country and then click Add Map Link.
