I love the way that website URLs autofill to make reuse easy.

What I'd REALLY love would be for locations to have the same behavior. Auto-filled locations would save me a tremendous amount of time and work.

I'm hoping to find that the feature is already there, and I just don't know how to invoke it.

Thanks.

Hi Larry,
I'm sorry to give you more bad news, but it looks like you can't do this yet either. I tried with custom fields to see if I could get around it. I created a custom Location field, made it a drop-down list, and gave it a default value. Then created a new event type that contains my Location field. However, it looks like I can't remove the default Location field. I can hide it from the published view, but not from the event details. I'm sorry I can't think of a better solution for this. If anyone else has any tricks they're able to share, please feel free!

There is a good workaround for this that I am using to essentially create "templates" for locations:

-- Create a new, unpublished calendar and call it LOCATION TEMPLATES, or anything else that makes sense to you.

-- Add "events," each of which essentially will be nothing but the location and it's pertinent information (address/map, phone number, website, other field information that won't change and you want to be able to copy.) For the "Description," just type in the Location name. I put it in all caps and follow it with the word "Template," to remind myself that this is what this "event" really is. (EX: OURTOWN THEATER Template)

You can make these template "events" private if you want to make double sure they don't get published. However, then you have to make sure you unclick the "Private" box from any copies you make.

-- Set the "date" to the last day of the current year. (You might want to use Dec. 31, 2007 at this point.) This will keep the "template" on your calendar, and default the year when you go to copy it to an actual event at this location. At the end of the year, you'll need to go in to all your templates and change the year.

-- Now, when you want to add an event to your real calendar(s), go to your LOCATION TEMPLATES "calendar," find the location you want, COPY that "event." The first thing you should when the copy entry window comes up is to change the OWNING CALENDAR on the right, to make sure the event goes to the calendar where you want it to appear.

This is working splendidly for me, and saves a tremendous amount of time.

Hi Kim. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your very neat workaround to making location information readily available.

I just wanted to point out to everyone that I heard yesterday that in the push that occurs later this week, we are adding a recent location list for map locations.

What will happen is if you type an address in the Location field and then add a map link to the location, a Recent Map Links link appears next to the location field. Rather than typing a repeat location from scratch, you can just choose the map link from the list. The address is filled in and the map link created.

The only qualification is that the Recent list appears only when you actually add map links to locations.

Hope this helps some with the frequently used location problem.

Hi Kim, Larry, and everyone.

Just one other note about the new Recent Map Links features. The list of recent links can grow to a maximum of 20 and locations you use frequently will rise to the top of the list.
