Text message error?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've tested the Text Message feature a few times over the last couple months and I'm not sure if I'm receiving all the information I'm supposed to.

A few minutes ago, I went to the NY Times website and I chose the "Txt me event info" option for a couple different events. The first event, I received on my cell phone, The Event Title, Date, and City/State.

The second event, I received part of the title, Date, Start time, Building name and Part of the address. This was mixed in with some html coding such as ? instead of the quotation marks indicated in the listing.

Now, I'm assuming that if the number of characters in the listing exceeds the limit for a cellular carrier it would cut things off, but at the same time send the remainder in a second follow-up text message. I'm not sure if the Trumba system is supposed to be sending the "Notes" for the specific event, or if it just takes whatever is the top information from the listing. Just in case it matters, I use a Palm Treo, but tested it out on my Sony Ericsson, as well.

Could you let me know what the process is and if this is what is supposed to happen when texting event info?

Thanks.

Hi kenm,

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to this off-hand, so I've enlisted the help of QA and development. I am hoping to have some helpful info back to you next Monday. I'm sorry for the delay! Thanks for your detailed message -- I'll be back, too, if I have any other questions.

Hi kenm,

I'm afraid I haven't heard any new info yet. It might be longer than I thought to get the complete info. Meanwhile, after reading your post again, I can add a little bit. I am currently of the understanding that Trumba will send all of the event data, not just content from a particular set of fields. So if you had your own custom fields, for instance, that info would get sent. I'm pretty sure it does not limit the number of characters it sends. I will get confirmation, though, and keep you posted.

Hi kenm,

One of our QA guys checked this out, and it looks like he found some issues with encoding, and as you found, truncation of the address. He's logged them, and hopefully they'll be addressed in the near future. Thanks a lot for acting on your hunch that something was not right there. : )

Also, I have to correct what I previously posted. I thought the event notes and custom field info were sent in the SMS messages, but that's wrong! He told me that just event description, date/time, and location get sent. How mortifying to be so wrong about that, and I'm sorry to have given you that info before.
